Sultan is a Syrian-American psychiatrist from an Alawi family. She is herself a Sunni Muslim. Well, she was born and raised as one, at any rate. And, unlike many of her sympathizers, she does not hold with the opinion that Islam was \'hijacked\' by extremists. On the contrary, she says, serious research into the holy texts led to her own personal rejection of the religion. The faith, she says, cannot be reformed, but rather has to be \'transformed.\' She grew up as a religious girl in Banyias (\"a small town on the Mediterranean\"), attended medical school in Aleppo, and now lives as a secular American in California, where she settled in 1989, eight months after her husband, and two years before her two elder children (her youngest was born in the US). ooo OOO ooo But 1979 was the real turning point of our lives. It was the year I witnessed the murder of a professor of mine. While shooting him, the killers were screaming \'Allahu Akbar [God is great]!\' I was in a state of shock. The sound of the bullets became associated in my mind with Allah. JP: Why was your professor targeted? Wafa - For no reason other than belonging to the Allawi sect of Islam - that of the president - while the majority in Syria were Sunnis. And at that time, there was a bloody conflict between the government and the Muslim Brotherhood. But I knew for a fact that he was not involved in politics. I was devastated, and began to question what kind of Allah this is. JP: Until then, were you and your family devout Muslims? Wafa - Oh yes. I had to fast, I had to preach about Islam...JP: What altered that? Wafa - After the trauma of the murder in the name of Allah, I delved into all the Islamic texts - the Koran and the Hadith - carefully studying each, one by one.Look, the Iraqi woman on the panel (Pascale Warda) told me about a case of a man killed in Iraq for selling ice, since Muhammed didn\'t use ice. Can you imagine? According to Sharia, selling ice is a crime! She also told me that Iraqis believe that you must not put cucumbers and tomatoes in the same bag, because cucumbers are male and tomatoes are female. This is an example of a dangerous belief system driving bad behavior. JP: Do you think a \'transformation\' will be best achieved through the men or the women? Wafa - Through the women. Muslim women have everything to gain by a transformed Islam and nothing to lose. They\'ve already lost everything. Muslim men, on the other hand, won\'t relinquish their powers so easily. JP: Are Western feminists on your side? I have encountered Americans and Israelis who - when it comes to the rights of women in Arab countries - side with multiculturalism. Has this been your experience as well? Wafa - Yes it has. I haven\'t received the kind of support I expected from women in the US. Recently, I gave a speech at the University of California, and during the question period, an American woman told me she didn\'t believe the things I was saying about Muslim men\'s treatment of women. And now London could be home to the largest Mosque outside of the Middle East. ooo OOO ooo Melanie Phillips, a British journalist, commentator and author, whose columns appear in the UK in the Daily Mail and who writes a blog at www.melaniephillips.com. She is the author of the new book Londonistan. ooo OOO ooo FP: So what inspired you to write Londonistan? Phillips: I was just appalled by the fact that, not only had Britain become the key European hub of Islamist extremism and terrorism during the 1990s under the noses of the British authorities, but even after both 9/11 and last year's suicide bombings in London the British political and security establishment is still appeasing Islamist extremism, and remains in a state of denial about the threat to the west. After the London bombings, when home-grown British Muslim boys set out to murder as many of their fellow British citizens as possible, a senior London police officer went on TV and said that the words Islam and terrorism did not go together. If a threat is so badly misunderstood in this way, it will not be defeated.FP: Can you talk a little bit about the collapse of traditional British identity and of the destructiveness of multiculturalism? Phillips: This is absolutely a key issue. Multiculturalism has turned Britain's values inside out -- and the root cause of the problem is the deconstruction of Britain's identity. For decades, the British elite has been consumed by loathing of its national identity and values which it decided were racist, authoritarian and generally disagreeable. Much of that was due to our old friend, post-colonial guilt. The elite was therefore vulnerable to the predations of the left, which had signed up to Gramsci's insight that a society could be suborned by replacing its normative values by the mores of those who transgressed them or were on society's margins. This gave rise to multiculturalism and minority rights, which held that all cultures were equal to each other and which thus provided minorities with an enormous weapon with which to force the majority to give in to their demands. One of the consequences of this was moral inversion, which holds that since minorities are weak they must always be victims of the majority because it is strong. So even when minorities behave badly, it's always the majority's fault. Translate that onto the world stage, and you arrive at the view that even when third world people commit terrorist outrages against the west it must be the west which is to blame. That's why multicultural Britain said, after 9/11, that America 'had it coming to them' -- and why, after the London bombings last July, it said the reason British Muslim boys had blown up the London transit system was because of Britain's support for the US in Iraq. FP: What is your perspective of the alliance of the Left and radical Islamism? Phillips: It's remarkable, to put it mildly, that the left -- with its obsessions with issues like gay rights, equality for women and sexual licence -- should have forged an alliance with radical Islamists who preach death to gays, the subjugation of women and the stoning of adulterers. It is an eye-opener to see, on the streets of London, so-called 'progressives' marching shoulder to shoulder with radical Islamists under the metaphorical banner of human rights and the literal banners of Hamas. Both the left and the radical Islamists have put aside their differences because they recognise the value of using each other in pursuit of their common objective, the destruction of western society. In other, less topsy-turvy times, the rest of the country would have raised an eyebrow at such an alliance and at the noxious views it is spewing out, which in turn so closely reflect the views of neo-fascist groups and white supremacists: hatred of Israel, Judeophobic tropes about a global Jewish conspiracy that endangers the world, loathing of capitalism and America. But alas, such is the extent of Britain's moral and cultural slide, and so poisonous has been the effect of the opposition to the war in Iraq, that far from being denounced such views are finding expression in mainstream society and public debate. FP: The British government has a current strategy of getting into bed with radical Islamism. Why?(...)In addition, it has an absolute blind spot about religious fanaticism. It refuses to acknowledge the religious nature of Islamic fascism -- maybe because to do so would mean facing up to horrendous challenges, or maybe because the British elite simply cannot take seriously something that sounds to its super-sophisticated ears so absurd as the restoration of the medieval Caliphate and the Islamisation of the world.

Top ten rules in the Quran that oppress and insult women: ooo OOO ooo 1. Mature men are allowed to marry prepubescent girls. The Quran in Sura 65.1, 4 says - O Prophet, when you (and the believers) divorce women, divorce them for their prescribed waiting-period and count the waiting-period accurately - 4 And if you are in doubt about those of your women who have despaired of menstruation, (you should know that) their waiting period is three months, and the same applies to those who have not menstruated as yet. As for pregnant women, their period ends when they have delivered their burden. (Maududi, vol. 5, pp. 599 and 617, emphasis added) Maududi correctly interprets the plain meaning of verse 4, which appears in the context of divorce - Therefore, making mention of the waiting-period for girls who have not yet menstruated, clearly proves that it is not only permissible to give away the girl at this age but it is permissible for the husband to consummate marriage with her. Now, obviously no Muslim has the right to forbid a thing which the Qur'an has held as permissible. (Maududi, vol. 5, p. 620, note 13, emphasis added). ooo OOO ooo 2. Husbands may hit their wives even if the husbands merely fear highhandedness in their wives (quite apart from whether they actually are highhanded — as if domestic violence in any form is acceptable). The Quran in Sura 4.34 says - If you fear highhandedness from your wives, remind them (of the teaching of God), then ignore them when you go to bed, then hit them. If they obey you, you have no right to act against them. God is most high and great. (Haleem, emphasis added). ooo OOO ooo 3. A Muslim polygamist may simply get rid of one of his undesirable wives. The Quran in Sura 4.129 says - It is not within your power to be perfectly equitable in your treatment with all your wives, even if you wish to be so, therefore, (in order to satisfy the dictates of Divine Law) do not lean towards one wife so as to leave the other in a state of suspense. (Maududi, vol. 1, p. 381). ooo OOO ooo 4. A man may be polygamous with up to four wives. The Quran Sura 4.3. ooo OOO ooo 5. Slave-girls are sexual property for their male owners. The Quran in Sura 4.24 says - And forbidden to you are wedded wives of other people except those who have fallen in your hands (as prisoners of war) - (Maududi, vol. 1, p. 319). Sayyid Maududi (d. 1979), a highly respected traditional commentator and scholar, says in his comment on the verse that is it lawful for Muslim holy warriors to marry women prisoners of war even when their husbands are still alive. But what happens if the husbands are captured with their wives? Maududi cites a school of law that says Muslims may not marry them, but two other schools say that the marriage between the captive husbands and wives is broken (note 44). But why would a debate over this cruelty emerge in the first place? No sex or marriage should take place between married female prisoners of war and their captors. In fact, no sex should take place between women captives and their Muslim overlords. But Islam traffics in injustice too often. ooo OOO ooo 6. A wife may remarry her ex-husband if and only if she marries another man, they have sex, and then this second man divorces her. The Quran in Sura 2.230 says - And if the husband divorces his wife (for the third time), she shall not remain his lawful wife after this (absolute) divorce, unless she marries another husband and the second husband divorces her. (In that case) there is no harm if they (the first couple) remarry - (Maududi, vol. 1, p. 165). ooo OOO ooo 7. A woman's testimony counts half of a man's testimony. The Quran in Sura 2.282 says - And let two men from among you bear witness to all such documents (contracts of loans without interest). But if two men be not available, there should be one man and two women to bear witness so that if one of the women forgets (anything), the other may remind her. The Quran in Sura 4.11 says - The share of the male shall be twice that of a female - (Maududi, vol. 1, p. 311) ooo OOO ooo 9. Husbands are a degree above their wives. The Quran Sura 2.228. ooo OOO ooo 10. A husband has sex with his wife, as a plow goes into a dirt field. The Quran in Sura (Chapter) 2.223 says - Your women are your fields, so go into your fields whichever way you like - (MAS Abdel Haleem, The Qur'an, Oxford UP, 2004). We should make no mistake about this verse. It includes sexual positions.

Who is the hooligan going to tease -- the sister in the hijab or the one in the miniskirt? Of course he will tease the sister in the miniskirt!(...)Allah has instructed us to follow the hijab, so that women can be saved from rape and molestation. In Islam, there is capital punishment for the rapist. Whenever we say this to non-Muslim brothers, they react by saying that Islam is a cruel law, that it is a barbaric law. But believe me, Islamic law gets results. We have asked a question to several people. We say that if someone, God forbid, rapes your sister, rapes your wife, rapes your daughter -- and you are made the judge, and if the rapist is brought before you, you are meant to give punishment -- what would you do? Most of the people said: "We will put him to death." Some went to the extent of saying that we will torture him to death. When it comes to your sisters and your daughters, you want to put the rapist to death. Then why do you have double standards when Islam is concerned?Western society, in the name of women's liberalization, has exploited the body of the woman, has degraded her soul, and has deprived her of her honor. They have converted women into mistresses, concubines, and society butterflies, who are mere tools in the hands of sex marketers and pleasure seekers. In America, according to statistics of the FBI, in 1990, the cases of rape were 1,750, and later on, 1,900. The Americans got a bit bolder. The latest statistics, of 1996, say that now the rate has gone up to 2,117 rapes taking place every day. If the Islamic Shari'a is applied in America, if every man, whenever he sees a woman, would lower his gaze, if every woman is asked to cover herself completely, except for the face and hands up to the wrist, and if there is capital punishment for the rapist -- will the rate of crime go up, remain the same, or come down in America? Of course it will come down! Islam gives dignity and protection to the women in Islam, and that is just the reason why Islam has prescribed the hijab.(...)Another misconception among non-Muslim brothers and sisters is that Muslims are fundamentalists and terrorists. They say and allege that you are terrorists and fundamentalists. Let's analyze the meaning of fundamentalism. If a person wants to be a good doctor, then he should know, he should follow, and should practice the teachings of medicine. In other words, he should be a fundamentalist in the field of medicine. If a person wants to be a very good scientist, he should know, he should follow, and he should practice the teachings of science. In other words, he should be a fundamentalist in the field of science. Similarly, if a person wants to be a good mathematician, he should know, he should follow, and he should practice the teachings of mathematics. In other words, he should be fundamentalist in the field of mathematics. We cannot paint all fundamentalists with the same brush, for a fundamentalist robber causes harm to the society, and that is highly disagreed upon. That is highly irresponsible. But at the same time, a fundamentalist doctor causes good in society. He cures and he heals, and he is much desired by society. I am proud to be a fundamentalist Muslim, because I know, I follow, and I strive to practice the teachings of Islam. Every Muslim should be proud to be a fundamentalist Muslim. That is because none of the teachings of Islam causes any harm to society. On the contrary, it causes.... it gives benefits to society. On the basis of this knowledge, every Muslim should be proud to be a fundamentalist Muslim.(...)I would stress that every Muslim should be a terrorist. I repeat: Every Muslim should be a terrorist. A terrorist is a person who terrifies others, who terrorizes others. That is precisely the reason we have the police. As soon as the robber sees the policeman, he is terrified, he is terrorized. Similarly, the Muslims should terrorize the anti-social elements in society. He should terrorize the robber, the decoy, the rapist. I know that "terrorist" is taken as a concept of a person who terrorizes the common man. But we Muslims should be terrorists for the anti-social elements in society.

THE first brick was thrown through the sitting room window at one in the morning, waking Nissar Hussein, his wife and five children with a terrifying start. The second brick went through his car window. It was a shock, but hardly a surprise. The week before, another brick had been thrown through the window as the family were preparing for bed in their Bradford home. The victim of a three-year campaign of religious hatred, Mr Hussein's car has also been rammed and torched, and the steps to his home have been strewn with rubbish. He and his family have been regularly jostled, abused, attacked, shouted at to move out of the area, and given death threats in the street. His wife has been held hostage inside their home for two hours by a mob. His car, walls and windows have been daubed in graffiti: "Christian bastard". The problem isn't so much what Mr Hussein, whose parents came from Pakistan, believes, but what he doesn't believe. Born into Islam, he converted eight years ago to Christianity, and his wife, also from Pakistan, followed suit. While those who convert to Islam, such as Cat Stevens, Jemima Khan, and the sons of the Frank Dobson, the former Health Secretary, and Lord Birt, the former BBC Director-General, can publicly celebrate their new religion, those whose faith goes in the other direction face persecution. Mr Hussein, a 39-year-old hospital nurse in Bradford, is one of a growing number of former Muslims in Britain who face not just being shunned by family and community, but attacked, kidnapped, and in some cases killed. There is even a secret underground network to support and protect those who leave Islam.
